Una silla para el futuro. Los diseños de los Smithson para la casa ideal

Abstract

En 1956 el periódico Daily Mail organizó una muestra bajo el título «La casa ideal». Para ello solicitaron a unos jóvenes Alison y Peter Smithson un ejercicio de proyección tratando de imaginarse cómo sería la casa del futuro a veinticinco años vista. La casa presente en la exposición era en realidad una pura escenificación, ni siquiera un prototipo, sino una maqueta de arquitectura hecha a escala real. Los únicos objetos reales fueron paradójicamente los modelos de sillas pensados ad hoc para la propuesta y es precisamente por esto que quizá sean los que de forma más imperecedera han conseguido transmitir la idea de futuro que tenían los Smithson. Una pequeña pieza de mobiliario es capaz de trascender a su escala y condensar de manera muy sintética las aportaciones arquitectónicas de sus autores.

In 1956 the newspaper Daily Mail organized an exhibition under the title «The ideal house». To this end, they asked young architects Alison and Peter Smithson for a projection exercise trying to imagine what the house of the future would look like in the next twenty—five years . The house sitted in the exhibition was actually a pure staging, not even a prototype, but a scale model of architecture. The only real objects were, paradoxically, the chairs models designed ad hoc for the proposal, and it is precisely for this reason that perhaps they are the ones that more accurately have expressed the Smithsons´ idea for the future. A small piece of furniture is able of transcending its scale and condensing in a very synthetic way the architectural contributions of its authors.
